Choosing a Roofing Contractor

5 Steps to Choosing a Roofing Contractor

Choosing a roofing contractor can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be! We’ve put together an easy-to-follow list of how to get started on your roofing project. Happy roofing!

1.  Do Your Homework

The best place to start when looking for a roofing contractor is Google. A simple Google search will pull up pages of roofing companies in your area. This is where the hardest part starts, narrowing down your options. Searching the Better Business Bureau, Angie’s List and Merchant Circle, can be a good way to filter companies.  These sites provide valuable customer feedback. Additionally, they allow you to check for any unresolved complaints or bad reviews.

2.  Run a Background Check

A good roofing company will gladly provide you with referrals and testimonials from customers. If you can’t find this information on their website, ask the company to provide these items before requesting an inspection. Additionally, if you know anyone who has used the company, it’s always a good idea to ask them about their experience.

3.  Get to Know Your Contractor

Set up a meeting to discuss your needs and their qualifications. Be sure to pay close attention to the attitude of the company representative. Good contractors take pride in their work and will be enthusiastic about the possibility of helping you with your problems. If you feel confident like the company is a good fit, ask for the company’s vital statistics. These include their relationship with their manufacturer and/or the products they use, as well as information on their distributor and warranty policies.

4.  Choose Your Roof Material

Your contractor should have up-to-date knowledge on quality products for your project. While they are probably the best source of information, you should play an active role in the product selection process. Ask questions about different materials such as brand names, life span, thickness, design, available colors and warranties. Selecting the best products is just as important as selecting the right contractor is.

5.  Negotiate & Sign Your Contract

A contractor who takes the time to prepare a detailed proposal will most likely do a thorough job. It’s important that your contractor can provide you with a road map of work to be completed from start to finish. Therefore, all work should be written as part of your contract. At this point of the process, your contractor should honor any reasonable request to negotiate the final price if they are eager to earn your business.
